Wolf-Girl, The Greeks And The Gods
The Wolf-Girl, The Greeks And The Gods is a book written by the historian, Tom Holland, and published by Walker Books in the UK. Having played superficially with emulating the style of ancient Greek vase painting in a previous book, Jason And The Golden Fleece, written by James Riordan, I wanted to make a much more committed attempt at employing the graphic nature of such painting in order to bring to life a story that had been told many times before, the internal politics of the city states of Greece in the face of the rising military and strategic dominance of Persia, and concluding with the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.

The Wolf-Girl, The Greeks And The Gods received many accolades, and much of the success of the book as an object is down to the talent and vision of its designer, Ben Norland. I’ve illustrated many books in my career, and worked with many, many designers, and I can say very honestly, and with great gratitude, that Ben has been both the most talented and the easiest to work with. The work of editors and designers invariably goes unrecognised and uncredited outside of the small world of publishing, but they are essential in producing any work of quality, and the best of them have contributed hugely to many an author and illustrator’s success, including my own.
