As with We Were Wolves, I wanted the collection of illustrations in Running With Horses to act as a celebration and homage to the numerous artists who inspired me to become a book illustrator and, through the beauty of their work and their imagination, served as a balm and encouragement in my childhood, especially in times of difficulty and loneliness. I can testify that art, including books, not only provides an entertainment or distraction, but can tangibly alter a person’s understanding of the world around them, and even shape their character. If one reader can pick up Running With Horses and feel less alone, and felt seen, then in my mind it is a huge and enduring success.
